About the Urdu language
Urdu is an Indo-Aryan language spoken in Pakistan and in many parts of India. It is similar to Arabic and Persian is due to the origin of the old Urdu which derived from a mixture of Turkish, Persian and Arabic. The meaning of the Turkish word “Urdu” signifies “an army” or ”legion”. The language is spoken by 490 million people around the world, and there is also an Urdu community in the UK of around 1 million speakers. The Urdu vocabulary contains approximately 70% Farsi, with some Arabic and Turkish. Urdu is written from right to left and is normally written in Nastaliq style.
The Urdu alphabet has 39 basic letters and 13 extra characters where numerals are also presented as symbols. Urdu is normally written using only consonants and long vowels where an indication of short vowels is presented as a small mark above or below the stressed letter. Urdu uses grammatical gender where all nouns are masculine or feminine and many adjectives change due to the gender adaptations. Urdu uses postpositions rather than prepositions.
Loyalty and respect to family is very important in the Pakistan culture where female members are protected from outside influences and older people are the most influential and respected family members. Elders are viewed as wise therefore are expected to make important decisions in the family. The use of hierarchy in the Pakistan culture is very important in family situations as well as in a business environment and a person’s title and their surname must be used unless invited to use their first name. Therefore when going to a Pakistani’s home make sure that you adapt to these cultural differences. Another important factor is that when doing business with Pakistanis bear in mind that Pakistanis do not require as much personal space as most western cultures, therefore do not back away as this can be interpreted as being rude.
