About the Thai language

Thai, often referred to as Central Thai or Siamese, belongs to a Tai-Kadai group of languages and is the official language of Thailand. It is spoken by 20 million people in Thailand, and 60 million people worldwide. Some of the biggest countries in which a large group of population speak Thai include Canada, Myanmar, US, France and England. Thai shares more than half of its words with the Lao language, and many similarities in the use of grammar and intonation – thus Thai and Lao are often mutually intelligible.

There are different forms of Thai, depending on the formality and circumstances. ‘Street’ or Common Thai is a very informal dialect, used between close relatives and friends; ‘Elegant’ or Formal Thai is the official and written version of the Thai language; Rhetorical Thai is used for public speaking; and Religious Thai is used when discussing Buddhism or addressing monks. There is also the Royal Thai, used only to refer to members of the royal family.

The Thai script is derived from the Khmer script and contains many words that are borrowed from Sanskrit, Old Khmer and Pali. Unlike the Roman alphabet, The Thai alphabet does not contain small and capital forms, spaces between words are rarely used and it is written from left to right.
