Scottish Gaelic translation – a language overview
Scottish Gaelic (or Gàidhlig) is a Goidelic language, and is related to the Celtic languages such as Breton, Cornish, Irish, Manx and Welsh. It is most closely related to Irish and Manx in particular, with all Scottish Gaelic dialects being mutually intelligible and written Irish being understood to a large extent.
The language is spoken by around 60,000 people in Scotland, with the 2001 census showing a total of 58,652 (1.2% of the Scottish population aged over three years old) being able to speak Scottish Gaelic at that time.
The 2001 census showed a decline of just over 7000 speakers from 1991. However, great efforts are being made, especially by the Highlands Council, to revive the language and the number of young speakers has increased in recent years.
Scottish Gaelic is classified as an autochthonous language (meaning indigenous to a region) by the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages, which has been ratified by the British government.
