About the Romanian language

Romanian is a Romance Language, spoken by around 26 million people predominantly in Romania. A variant of Romanian is also spoken in Moldova, where it is called Moldovan and is written in the Cyrillic alphabet. Due to the large number of Romanian emigrés around the world, the Romanian language has expanded into many different areas where small communities have been formed. These include parts of Albania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Kazakhstan, Macedonia, Russia, Serbia and Spain. Some communities are particularly large: in Israel, for example, around 5% of the population speaks Romanian.

The Romanian alphabet includes 31 letters and is a modification of the Latin alphabet. Pronunciation is almost completely phonetic. Many words have been taken from Slavic languages and also from French, Old Church Slavonic, German, Greek and Turkish; however, Romanian is very similar to Italian due to its roots in Latin.
