Moldovan translation – a language overview
Moldovan, as a language, is controversial. Many arguments exist stating that Moldovan is simply a dialect of Romanian that is called Moldovan in the landlocked state of Moldova in Eastern Europe.
Certainly, Moldovan and Romanian from a linguists perspective are closely related, mutually intelligible dialects of the same language. Many sources say that it is the official name given to the Romanian language in the Republic of Moldova and in the territory of Transnistria.
Moldova and Romania share the same literary standard, whilst there are around three million native speakers of Moldovan worldwide.
In Moldova’s educational establishments the discipline regarding the state language is called ‘Romanian language’. However, former Moldovan president Vladimir Voronin called for that to be changed to ‘Moldovan language’, yet it never came to fruition.
Until as recently as 1989, Moldovan used the Cyrillic alphabet as the basis for its writing system. Since then the Romanian version of the Latin alphabet has been used extensively following its adoption. Despite this, some orthographic changes used in the Romanian language have not been carried over into Moldovan.
