Malay translation – a language overview
Malay is an Austronesian language and the official national language of Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei. Malay is also one of the official languages of Singapore, as well as being an official language in the Cocos (Keeling) Islands in the Indian Ocean.
The total number of global speakers of Standard Malay stands around 18 million. Malay mustn’t be confused with Indonesian, which is a form of Malay and has around 170 million speakers.
Malay dates back to around 683-86 AD, when it is believed the earliest known inscriptions were found. These inscriptions were written in an Indian script during what would have been the time of the kingdom of Srivijaya, and they were discovered in southern Sumatra, as well as on the island of Bangka.
Malay adopted an adapted version of the Arabic script as its writing system in the 14th century, due to the presence of Islam in southeast Asia. However, in the 17th century, due predominantly to British and Dutch influence, the Latin alphabet replaced the Arabic script.
Jawi, based on the Arabic script, retains co-official status in Brunei and Malaysia though.
