Lingala translation – a language overview

Lingala is a Bantu language of the Niger-Congo language family. It is spoken throughout both a large area of the Republic of the Congo, as well as the northwestern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where it is an official language.

The modern form of Lingala is based on Bobangi, which was spoken by the people (or Bangala) living along the Congo River between Lisala and Kinshasa, and was the regional trade language prior to the arrival of Europeans in the late nineteenth century.

There are four variations of Lingala; Standard, Spoken, Kinshasa and Brazzaville.

Standard Lingala is used in educational and news broadcasts and is deemed to be the formal version, whilst Spoken Lingala is used in people’s day-to-day lives and informal environments, including songs.
