Kurdish translation – a language overview
A dialect continuum, Kurdish is the native language of the Kurds across Western Asia. There are; 10 million speakers in Turkey, 6.5 million in Iran, approximately six million in Iraq, two million in Syria, 150,000 in Azerbaijan, 100,000 in Armenia, 90,000 in Lebanon and 60,000 in Georgia.
There are many Kurdish speakers in Europe too; up to 800,000 in Germany, 150,000 in France, up to 100,000 in the UK, around 70,000 in the Netherlands, up to 60,000 in Switzerland and Belgium, over 50,000 in Austria, over 25,000 in Sweden, over 20,000 in Greece, around 10,000 in Denmark, 5,000 in Norway, 4,000 in Italy and 3,000 in Finland.
Over 20,000 reside in the United States and Canada, whilst another 10,000-15,000 live in Australia.
According to KONDA, a leading Research and Consultancy company in Turkey, close to 12% of the total population of Turkey (74.7 million) speaks Kurdish as their native or second language. The CIA World Factbook states that 10% of the total population of Iran also speaks Kurdish.
