About the Korean language
The official language of South Korea and North Korea, Korean is spoken by over 78 million people globally. South Koreans most commonly refer to the language as Hangungmal or Hangugeo, and speakers in North Korea and China refer to the language as Chosonmal or Chosono. There is however a difference between the two dialects and writings spoken in each country. Hanja (Chinese characters) is widely used in South Korea, but has been banned in North Korea. Hanja characters are borrowed from the Chinese language, but their use is adapted to Korean pronunciation. The majority of Korean writings are now written in Hangul, which became more widespread during the 20th century. When expressing a persons’ importance and superiority in status, special nouns or verb endings are used to indicate the ‘class level’ of the subject. The Korean vocabulary contains many Chinese words.
