Kazakh translation – a language overview
Kazakh is an official language in Kazakhstan and Russia, as well as being spoken in Afghanistan, China, Iran, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.
It belongs to the Kipchak (Western Turkic) branch of the Turkic languages and is closely related to Nogai and Karakalpak. Kazakh is an agglutinative language, meaning most words are formed by joining morphemes together.
Kazakh currently uses the Cyrillic alphabet, having formerly used the Latin alphabet and Arabic script before that. However, recent plans have been made as part of a government modernisation program, in which the idea is to replace the Cyrillic alphabet with the Latin alphabet. No decision has yet been made, due to a lengthy investigation into the consequences and costs of implementing this.
