Irish Gaelic translation – a language overview
Gaeilge, or Irish Gaelic as it known in English, is one of the three Goidelic languages. Consequently, it is closely related to Manx and Scottish Gaelic.
Originating in the Ireland, an island to the north-west of the continent of Europe, Irish Gaelic is today spoken by a minority of Irish people as their mother tongue and first language, whilst a larger number speak it as a second language.
It enjoys constitutional and official status as the first language of the Republic of Ireland, whilst it is also an official language of the European Union and a recognised minority language in bordering Northern Ireland. The main concentrations of Irish Gaelic speakers are in the Gaeltachtaí, which are found predominantly along the west coast of Ireland.
Irish Gaelic has the oldest vernacular literature in Western Europe, with the oldest surviving manuscripts that contain examples of Irish Gaelic dating back as far as the eighth century.
