If this is your first time working with a translation company, it may seem quite daunting at first – it is hard to know which questions you should ask and who to trust. As the only translation company of its kind in the UK, founded and managed by trained linguists, we have put together this quick ‘rough guide’ drawing on our experience and background in linguistics and providing translation services.

  • Don’t hesitate to ask about the particular credentials and experience of the translator/proof reader who is to work on your text. You chose your native language copy writer carefully – you have every right to pay the same attention to your foreign language copywriter.
  • Rates fluctuate between languages – this is dependent on, amongst other things, the technicality of the language itself and the cost of living in the particular countries. For example, French, Spanish, Arabic and Chinese are at the lower end of the scale, whereas Japanese, Swedish and Finnish are more expensive.
  • You will also find that the cost for translating a technical document will be slightly higher than that of a ‘general’ text. For instance, a document containing specialist pharmaceutical terminology will be charged at a higher rate than a leaflet advertising the services of a printing company. This is due to the need of a translator with a background in the specialist area and an up to date, in depth knowledge of the terminology – otherwise you risk receiving a sub-standard translation that can seriously compromise a company or brand’s legitimacy and reputation.
  • If you are offered a very low price for translation, and in particular for a language that is normally a high rate (eg. Japanese), then beware! Low costs do not often translate (sorry) into high quality – an excellent translation requires an excellent translator, thus requiring a respectable price. Of course, high volumes of work are often subject to discounts by agencies and freelance translators, however you should be wary of rock bottom prices if you are concerned about obtaining a good quality translation.
  • Know exactly what it is you want your translation to achieve – a good agency will talk at length to you about your aims before starting work. This is a fundamental part of our Project Management procedure and enables us to assign the correct translators to the right texts producing excellent results every time. Things to bear in mind – is there any specialist terminology knowledge required? Who will be reading the text and who is it aimed at?
