It is spoken mainly in Cyprus and Greece as the official language and there are many communities all over the world where Greek is also spoken, including the US, the UK, Egypt, South Africa, Brazil, France, Belgium and Argentina. There are also countries in which Greek is recognised as a minority language and these include Albania, Turkey, Italy, Armenia and Ukraine.
Use of the Greek language can be divided into 6 different main time periods: Proto-Greek, Mycenaean Greek, Ancient Greek, Koine Greek, Medieval Greek and Modern Greek. Greek is written in the Greek alphabet, which consists of 24 characters but it lacks many sounds that would normally be used in the English language. This causes a lot of problems for Greek speakers, especially when pronouncing English words like’ fish’ and ‘shop’. The learning process of the Greek language would take up to 44 weeks which is around 1100 hours for an English native speaker.
