Grazie Veritas
Posted by: Valerio
When I think about the very first time I walked into Veritas House, I can remember that it didn’t take me long to realise that the writing saying ‘passion for language’ wasn’t here by chance. That was the launch party of the new Veritas offices in Adelaide Street, one morning towards the end of March 2010. There were flowers, champagne, a proper buffet, but the desks were still empty and the computers were not even plugged into the sockets.
Even though we didn’t know each other properly, Sharon, Rachel and Elfie did welcome me as if I was an old friend who had just returned after being away for a while. Sharon told me about Veritas, how Rachel and her set up the business and about the Veritas philosophy: providing quality translation services to valued customers. A year and a half down the line, I would be able to repeat those words by heart. Sharon and Rachel’s enthusiasm and passion for their industry was infectious and that’s why when they asked me ‘Would you like to join us?’ I didn’t have any hesitation in saying ‘Yes!’.
That toast with Sharon, Rachel and Elfie was the beginning of 18 months that completely changed my professional career. I was suddenly part of that everyday life of an ‘employee’ that I thought was not in line with my personal attitude: Monday to Friday, 9-5. It took me just a few days to realise that my job at Veritas was not going to become a routine or just an office job full of boring paperwork to do. I could see from the very beginning that Veritas was very open to the initiative and creativity of the people who decided to embrace its philosophy. I became an integral part of the Veritas Team almost without noticing it. My method of planning work, managing timescales and ensuring the quality of our translation services soon became a company standard. At the same time, I assimilated all the indications and the instructions that other people gave me in a natural way, just as if I knew everything already.
I found that my behaviour or that of my colleagues has never been forced or perfunctory. Every single person in the office, from the Directors to the Interns, has always been available to bring their strengths together and help each other, without asking anything in return. In the last year and a half, I never, and I mean never, came across any rivalry or antagonism between colleagues, and never saw anybody try to preponderate over the others. The atmosphere in the office was always relaxed, warm and genuine, and this is something invaluable and rare to find in any work environment. This attitude and passion for language shines through in our interpreting and translation services.
While I am writing these few lines, in this my last day of work at Veritas House, I am aware that it will be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to find the same warmth, fondness and friendly relationships that have accompanied me during these last 18 months. Veritas House will always be ‘home’ for me and some of my nicest memories of Swansea will always be related to the amazing people I met here at Veritas.
This is why I would like to thank from the bottom of my heart Sharon, Rachel, Elfie, Estrella, Lauren, Laura, Terry (both of them), Nika, Chiara, Ben, Megan and all the people I met during this wonderful adventure. I will always carry you in my heart and, wherever I will go, I will always be proud to say that I have been a member of the Veritas Team.
With love,
Your ‘Capo’
