Azerbaijani translation – a language overview
Azerbaijani belongs to the Turkic language family, of which it belongs to the Oghuz branch, which are spoken by more than 150 million people from the Balkans to China.
It is fairly widely known that Azerbaijani and Turkish are similar in many respects, and that a native speaker of one language is able to understand the other. However, it is considerably easier for an Azerbaijani speaker to understand Turkish than vice versa.
Azerbaijani makes use of three writing systems. Latin and Cyrillic are used for North Azerbaijani in Azerbaijan, whilst Perso-Arabic is used for South Azerbaijani in Iran.
There are also native speakers of Azerbaijani in Turkey, Amenia, Georgia, Russia, Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria.
